Jeep Shows Off Cherokee Trailhawk Prototype, Debuts Extreme Recon Prototype

Last Monday Jeep showcased six new builds ahead of this weekend’s annual Easter Jeep Safari event in Moab, Utah that included custom takes on two classic Wranglers and a refreshed XJ Cherokee. But Jeep wasn’t done shocking us in Moab today, revealing two more concepts perched on the brand’s latest models: the upcoming Cherokee and 2026 electric Recon.

We were initially confused by Jeep’s omission of the Cherokee among this year’s crop of custom creations, but the automaker was just saving it for today. Dubbed the Cherokee Upland, Jeep says this inspired machine offers “a more expressive, adventure-forward vision” of the SUV that just entered its second generation for 2026.

Judging by Easter Jeep Safari standards, the changes to Cherokee Upland are rather tame. It features a unique front fascia treatment that black out the area directly below the grill and headlights, which now rest atop an aggressive looking bumper complete with integrated tow hooks and a doubtfully improved approach angle. Additional tow hooks are included out back, and up top there’s a custom roof rack.

The Upland rides on new 18-inch wheels fitted with 32-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires. Every modification featured on the Upland concept rides eerily prototype-ready, and we have a strong suspicion as to why. Because the 2026 Jeep Cherokee skipped its Trailhawk flavor this year, Jeep very likely used the Cherokee Upland to give us our first glimpse of what will one fill its boots. Drops even further our suspicion is that Jeep sent over the press photos for this vehicle saved as “Jeep KM Trailhawk,” KM being the internal chassis designation for this new generation Cherokee.

Jeep’s other surprise visitor in Moab today is the Recon Overwatch concept, which dials the brand’s brand-new electric Wrangler replacement up to 11 and into full-on trail tyrant mode. Starting with a two-inch suspension lift, the Overwatch adds 34-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires fitted to swanky 18-inch beadlock wheels.

Of course, the biggest aesthetic difference is that there are no doors. Jeep used carbon fiber panels strategically around the Recon Overwatch including on the wide fender flares and along the door jam inserts. To keep the outdoor theme going strong, rear window and quarter windows were also removed. Overlapping steel rock sliders and front and rear belly skid plates keep the electric powertrain safe while aftermarket “trail-spec” side mirrors keep you aware of what’s behind you. Out back, an aftermarket roof rack sits atop the SUV perfecting a cargo basket for extra gear.

Moving indoors, drivers will find green-wrapped steering wheel and seats as well as coarse all-weather floor mats—a necessity when your Jeep has no glass and no doors. While we have a pretty good idea of what the Cherokee Upland will become, Jeep was tight-lipped on any future plans for the Recon Overwatch so it’s most likely Jeep just wanted to show off its off-road capabilities with this wild concept.
